Garrett Takes Hard Line Following Our Action on Monday

On Monday, members of our Council protested outside Rep. Scott Garrett's office in Newton. We told him "Don't Default on the American Dream!"

The next day Garrett posted an editorial on his website that details his hard-line position on the debt ceiling:  "...I will not vote for a debt ceiling increase that involves any tax increases on any segment of the American population. Period." (Link)

Garrett is a member of the Republican Study Committee (RSC) responsible for "Cut, Cap, and Balance"--legislation so radically conservative it proved dead-on-arrival in the Senate this morning.

Last month, New Jersey's unemployment rate rose to 9.5%. Instead of proposing real solutions to America's economic crisis, the RSC is wasting valuable Congressional time. Garrett may believe it's okay to play Russian roulette with our economy to puff up his far-right credentials. But our informal traffic poll near Newton Green suggests many of his constituents disagree.

Last weekend Rebuild the Dream launched a new grassroots campaign that brought 25,000 people together at nearly 1,600 house meetings across the country. And we did it without any free advertising by Fox News. Now is truly our moment to rally for a people-powered agenda at all levels of government.

If you'd like to be part of that movement, please join us for our July 30th organizing meeting, where we'll plan a national day of action in August to demand that Congress explain "Where Are the Jobs?"
