Emergency Action! GOP: Don't Destroy the American Dream

 American Dream Movement Emergency Action!
GOP: Don't Destroy the American Dream
Tuesday, August 2nd at 12:00pm
Rep. Scott Garrett's District Office
83 Spring Street
Newton, New Jersey 07860

RSVP now by clicking here.

Republicans are about to push our nation off an economic cliff. Over the next 48 hours we need to mobilize as many of our neighbors, family, and friends as possible to demand the Republicans stop playing dangerous political games and do what's right for America.
At noon on Tuesday—whether there's a deal in place or if we're about to default on our nation's bills—we're protesting at hundreds of GOP offices around the country. We'll show our outrage that they've held our whole economy hostage to force cuts to vital programs and to protect tax breaks for corporations and millionaires.
We'll gather in front of our Republican senators' and representatives' offices to speak out against their attack on our economy. Can you make it out?

Media Coverage of Our July 26th Rally in Newton

NEWTON -- About 20 members of the political action group MoveOn.org staged a rally in front of the office of Rep. Scott Garrett, R-5th Dist., Tuesday at noon.

The demonstrators chanted, "No default" to passing motorist while waving signs that read "raise it or resign" in reference to the debate in Washington over increasing the federal debt limit.

The demonstrators were peaceful and orderly, and many motorists honked their horns in support.  (continue reading)

Garrett Takes Hard Line Following Our Action on Monday

On Monday, members of our Council protested outside Rep. Scott Garrett's office in Newton. We told him "Don't Default on the American Dream!"

The next day Garrett posted an editorial on his website that details his hard-line position on the debt ceiling:  "...I will not vote for a debt ceiling increase that involves any tax increases on any segment of the American population. Period." (Link)

Garrett is a member of the Republican Study Committee (RSC) responsible for "Cut, Cap, and Balance"--legislation so radically conservative it proved dead-on-arrival in the Senate this morning.

Last month, New Jersey's unemployment rate rose to 9.5%. Instead of proposing real solutions to America's economic crisis, the RSC is wasting valuable Congressional time. Garrett may believe it's okay to play Russian roulette with our economy to puff up his far-right credentials. But our informal traffic poll near Newton Green suggests many of his constituents disagree.

Last weekend Rebuild the Dream launched a new grassroots campaign that brought 25,000 people together at nearly 1,600 house meetings across the country. And we did it without any free advertising by Fox News. Now is truly our moment to rally for a people-powered agenda at all levels of government.

If you'd like to be part of that movement, please join us for our July 30th organizing meeting, where we'll plan a national day of action in August to demand that Congress explain "Where Are the Jobs?"

March on Washington.

Our new MoveOn Council will hold its first organizing meeting on Saturday, July 30th at 1:00pm in Lafayette. We're bringing together participants from three American Dream house meetings, as well as other Northwest New Jerseyans who want to get involved but weren't able to attend a meeting. We'll talk about how a Council works, what each of us can contribute, and how we can build our power by growing our membership. We'll solidify our group's mission and goals. And most importantly, we'll plan public-facing events for August and September. There will also be time at the end of our meeting to mingle, reconnect, and make new friends.
